Kava History

As far back as the late 1600’s the mysterious kava root was found in the South Pacific Islands in which islanders were said to clean the root, chew it up, and then spit it into a bowl. Water and coconut milk was added, strained, and then drank.

Other historical reference includes:

in 1775, Europe sighted James Cook as the first white man to drink kava
1778, kava was given the name piper methysticum

Throughout history, kava has been used for many different purposes including:

ceremonies
reconciling differences between members of villages
served before and during important meetings
ceremonial drink before traveling
to celebrate births
To celebrate weddings
Burial ceremonies
Used as gifts
Cure illnesses

The exact origin of kava is unknown as many of the South Pacific Islands would love to claim to be the home or origin and all have their own legends and folktale to prove they are the origin.
